UPGRADE OUPV to MASTER 100-Tons – $390

Captains License

(Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal) 

General Description – The first three levels of the Masters License are 25-ton, 50-ton and 100-ton.  The Masters License is required to operate an inspected vessel that carries seven or more passengers.  In order to carry seven or more passengers “under sail,” a Sail Endorsement is also required.

 

 

 

 

General Course Description – This course is for upgrading an existing OUPV License (6-pack) to a 25-ton, 50-ton or 100-ton Masters License.  It can also be taken in conjunction with the OUPV course to apply for the Masters License.  This course is 24-hours and runs for three consecutive days.   Class hours are from 8:00 am through 5:30 PM for the three days of instruction.  We give the test at the end of day 3.

License Operating Area – Based on the geographical area of your sea service experience, this license can be issued for “Inland” waters or “Great Lakes” waters, or “Near Coastal” waters.  The “Inland” license is just US “Inland” waters.  The “Great Lakes” license includes “Inland” waters.  The “Near Coastal” license includes “Inland”, “Great Lakes” and “Near Coastal” waters up to 200 nautical miles offshore.

  • Sea Service can be counted back to your 16th birthday.
  • For this license, a day of sea service is defined as at least 4 hours underway on any given calendar day.
  • Documented on CG-719S or letter from Marine Employer.

 

SEA SERVICE REQUIREMENTS:

UPGRADE to 100-TON
Inland, Great Lakes or Near Coastal
Recency – 90 days must be in the past 3 years on vessels.
Inland – 360 days of service in the deck department. Near Coastal – 720 days of service in the deck department on Ocean, Near Coastal or Great Lakes waters, OF WHICH:  service on inland waters, other than Great Lakes, may substitute for up to 360 days of the total required service.
Great Lakes – 360 total days of service in the deck department, OF WHICH: 90 days of service on Great Lakes, otherwise the endorsement will be limited to inland waters of the US (excluding the Great Lakes)

 

Tonnage Limitation – This course satisfies the examination requirement for the 25-ton, 50-ton or 100-ton Masters License.  The tonnage level of a Masters License is based on the size vessels on which you have your sea service experience.

50-GRT – 90 days (25%) of service on vessels of 25 GRT or above OR 180 days (50%) of service on vessels 17 GRT or above. 50-GRT – 180 days (50%) of service on vessels of 26 GRT or above, OR 360 days of service on vessels of 17 GRT or above.
100-GRT – 90 days (25%) of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR 180 days (50%) of service on vessels of 34 GRT or above. 100-GRT – 180 days (25%) of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR 360 days of service on vessels of 34 GRT or above.
